Birkmire Trucking Company was started in 1947 by Thomas J. Birkmire with a pick-up truck, which operated out of the local coal yards, hauling coal from house to house. The business grew along with the Birkmire family. Several of Tom and Virginia Birkmire's eight sons eventually became an integral part of the business. The business was a family affair with Mrs. Birkmire acting as bookkeeper and dispatcher while Tom and their sons, as drivers and mechanics, kept the growing fleet on the road.
Mr. Birkmire built the company's customer base by providing trucking service twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. Birkmire Trucking became an extension of our customers and served their trucking needs anytime, day or night. Because of the service to our customers, we became a prime carrier for many of Erie's manufacturing facilities. The business grew from a single pick-up in 1947 to twelve tractors and thirty trailers by the early eighties.
In the earlier years of the business, Birkmire Trucking Company was primarily a flatbed operation and as the demands became apparent in other areas of transportation, Mr. Birkmire invested in vans and later refrigerated trailers. By the turn of the century, the family goal was to grow and maintain 65 power units to service the varied needs of all our customers and by providing specialized service to meet those needs.
As of January 1, 2003, we downsized to approximately 15 power units under sole ownership of Birkmire Trucking. We are now primarily focused in flatbed transportation and the rental industry. With over 25 power units and over 1,000 rental units Birkmire Trucking will be able to serve many, if not, all of your needs.
Birkmire Trucking is still family owned and operated with many life long employees. We have the knowledge and expertise to supply quality service for this demanding industry. Throughout the years, we didn't just want to be as good as our competition, we strove to be better - we feel we have met those objectives and look for continuous improvement.
